William Hugh Wheir, DVM CURRICULUM VITAE 1974: BA in Southwest Studies specializing in Archeology, at Fort Lewis College, Durango, Colorado. 1975: BS in Biomedical Science at Texas A&M University, College Station, Texas. 1979: Doctor of Veterinary Medicine, Texas A&M University. 1979-1981: Work experience with other veterinarians in small animal practice in Dallas, mixed animal practice in Silver City, N.M., and small animal practice in Albuquerque. 1981: Began East West Mobile Animal Care, a private practice in Santa Fe, N.M. 1983: Doctor of Oriental Medicine from the Kototama Acupuncture School in Santa Fe, N.M. 1987: Was invited to teach animal acupuncture at the Veterinary School at the Universidad Autonoma de Benito Juarez de Oaxaca, Mexico. 1989: Began Animal Alliance (AA), a non-profit organization based in Santa Fe and dedicated to reducing animal suffering and protecting endangered species. Started AA’s Mexico Spay-Neuter Program, teaching spay-neuter techniques at the Veterinary School in Oaxaca and conducting rural clinicsin the field in villages in Mexico. 1990: Started AA’s Sea Turtle Protection Program for the endangered Olive Ridleys at Escobilla and the Leatherbacks at Barra de la Cruz, both species nesting on the pacific coast of Oaxaca, Mexico. 1991: Was invited to begin a Spay-Neuter Program on the Indian Pueblos of Northern New Mexico. 1995: In collaboration with the Humane Society International, began the field trail studies in Mexico and Costa Rica to test Neutersol, a chemical sterilant for male dogs. Ongoing studies with the School of Veterinary Medicine at the Universidad Nacional Autonoma de Mexico in Mexico City. 1997: Started AA’s Educational Outreach Program, taking Native American high school kids to work on the turtle beaches in Mexico. 1998: Worked for the University of Missouri as a monitor for the USA FDA clinical field-trial studies for Neutersol as shelters in Arizona and NewYork. 1999: In collaboration with the Humane Society International, visited Romania twice to initiate a spay/neuter/Neutersol study to address the serious dog over-population problem in Bucharest. 2000: Ongoing collaboration between AA and HSUS/HSI in the field of immuno-contraception to address the problem of animal overpopulation using Neutersol and another alternative to surgery, PZP, a female vaccine. 2001: In collaboration with HSUS/HSI, AA conducts “spay-shot” or zona pellucida sterilization trials in female dogs in South Africa. Animal Alliance participates in the Makalali elephant PZP immuno-contraception project and Wildlife Fertility Conference in Kruger National Park. BeginUNAM Mobile Spay-Neuter Project. 2003: Completes “spay-shot” trials in Johannesburg and helps establish PZPimmuno-contraception vaccine production lab. 2004: AA gives presentations of work and studies at ACCD, Bioneers, Peace Jam and International Sea Turtle conferences. Began field work on Mexico Neutersol Project. |
